Argaty Red Kites Photography Outing – Sunday 5th July

Our July outing took us to Argaty Red Kites, near Doune, for a pre-booked wildlife photography experience.

The day combined a morning in the woodland bird hide with an afternoon photographing the famous Red Kite feeding session.

We arrived at the Argaty Visitor Centre just after 9.30 am, shortly after the rain had cleared. Following a briefing from our host, we travelled to the woodland hide, enjoying a short walk across the fields before settling in for the morning session. Over the next three hours there was a constant flow of wildlife. Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Marsh Tits, Long-tailed Tits, Robins, Chaffinches, Treecreepers and Blue Tits all visited the feeding stations, while several Red Squirrels made regular appearances, providing excellent photographic opportunities.

After a welcome coffee break and packed lunch, we headed to the Red Kite photography hide. We were fortunate to have the smaller photography hide, together with access to an outside platform, giving plenty of room to follow the fast-moving birds as they swooped in to collect food.

Capturing these magnificent birds in flight was both challenging and rewarding, with everyone coming away with some memorable images.

Members have generously contributed images from the day, together with a short video featuring the woodland birds, Red Squirrels and the spectacular Red Kite feeding session. Some dramatic images show two Red Kites locked in an aerial confrontation, highlighting the speed and agility of these magnificent birds.

Despite an uncertain weather forecast, the rain stayed away for most of the day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the outing. It was an excellent day of wildlife photography and one that we will certainly look forward to repeating in the future.

Away Team - Gillian Temple, Ian and Elizabeth Monk, Robert Brownlie, Ken Goodfellow and Linda Cooper.
