With Ronnie Collins of West Fife Woodlands

A lively photographic visit exploring the history, wildlife and autumn character of Valleyfield Woods—with stories, ideas and plenty of good company along the way.

On Sunday 18 October, DPA members joined Ronnie Collins, leader of West Fife Woodlands, for an energetic and enjoyable visit to Valleyfield Woods.

Ronnie brought the place to life, sharing its history as part of Robert Preston’s estate and explaining how Humphry Repton’s 1803 design shaped the landscape. As we explored, we visited the Deer Park, the Walled Garden and its former pineapple beds, the canal, bridges and weirs, and the Gardeners’ Cottage and aviary.

We were also scouting the woods as a location for future photography. The Bluther Burn, old trees, autumn colour, fungi and wildlife all offered subjects to look out for. Ronnie helped us notice details we might otherwise have walked past, while sharing news of West Fife Woodlands’ restoration work, orchard planting and children’s fort.

There was plenty of informative discussion, a few jokes and time to take photographs along the way. We came away having learned more about this remarkable place, found new photographic possibilities and enjoyed good company. Who said photography can’t be fun?

Thanks and follow-up

A big thank you to Ronnie Collins of West Fife Woodlands for sharing his knowledge of Valleyfield Woods and making the visit such an enjoyable one. Thanks, too, to everyone who came along, shared ideas and made time for photography and fun.

We hope you enjoy the video and photographs. What caught your eye, or which part of Valleyfield Woods would you most like to photograph? Leave a comment, and please share the post with anyone who might enjoy discovering the woods.
